LED light therapy is one of the most evidence-based home beauty technologies, but most people use it incorrectly. They confuse colors, treat for too short, or expect results from wrong wavelengths. This guide gets you the science right so you actually benefit.
LED light at specific wavelengths penetrates skin and is absorbed by mitochondrial chromophores (mainly cytochrome c oxidase). This stimulates ATP production, reduces oxidative stress, and triggers cellular responses including collagen synthesis (red), bacterial death (blue), and increased blood flow (near-infrared).
LED therapy has a “biphasic dose response” – too little = no effect, too much = inhibitory effect. The sweet spot is typically 4-60 J/cm2 depending on wavelength. Most home devices need 15-30 minutes per area per session.
LED therapy cannot: remove fat, tighten loose skin significantly, remove deep wrinkles, treat hyperpigmentation directly. It is a slow, gentle modality – excellent for prevention and mild correction.
