Room Setup Guide
Your treatment room is where client experience meets clinical performance. Space requirements, electrical planning, furniture layout, ambiance design, and health code compliance β for home studios, salon suites, and commercial spaces.
Single treatment room: minimum 100 sq ft (10 mΒ²) β enough for a treatment bed, equipment cart, practitioner movement space, and small storage area. 120β150 sq ft is ideal for standard treatments. For body sculpting where clients change positions and you need access to multiple body areas, 150+ sq ft prevents the space from feeling cramped. For rooms housing large equipment (full cryolipolysis units, multi-applicator EMS), plan for 150β200 sq ft.
Treatment bed: Position so you can access at least 3 sides. Head of bed away from the door for client privacy. Minimum 3 feet clearance on your primary working side β this prevents back strain from reaching across the bed. Equipment: Primary machine within arm’s reach on your dominant side. Use a height-adjustable mobile cart. Power outlets behind equipment, not where cords become trip hazards. Storage: All consumables within reach without leaving the client. Closed cabinets β open shelving looks cluttered and unprofessional. Client zone: Coat hook, shelf for belongings, privacy screen for changing β even in small rooms, creating a defined client space improves the experience.
This is the #1 setup mistake: beautiful room, then breakers trip when two machines run simultaneously. Plan electrical FIRST, before any furniture. Most aesthetic machines run on standard outlets (110V/15A or 220V/10A), but high-powered devices (laser, multi-function platforms) may draw 10β15 amps continuously. Running multiple devices on one circuit trips breakers mid-treatment β embarrassing and disrupts client trust. Have a licensed electrician: (1) map which outlets are on which circuits, (2) install dedicated 20-amp circuits for treatment rooms, and (3) place outlets where equipment will sit, not where extension cords are needed (code violation + safety hazard).
Adequate ventilation is both a comfort and compliance requirement. Equipment generates heat β a room with two running devices and a practitioner can increase ambient temperature 5β10Β°F during a session. Individual temperature control per room is ideal; at minimum, a portable unit that can cool or warm as needed. Target: 68β72Β°F (20β22Β°C). Proper ventilation also removes any fumes from cleaning products and prevents the “clinical smell” that some clients find anxiety-inducing.

Converting a spare room, finished garage, or basement. Requirements: dedicated room (not shared during business hours), private or discreet access for clients, adequate ventilation, minimum 2 dedicated electrical outlets on 15β20A circuit, hot and cold water accessible nearby, hard sanitizable flooring (not carpet), lockable door for privacy. Budget breakdown: Treatment bed ($300β$800), equipment cart ($50β$150), stool ($80β$200), privacy screen ($50β$100), adjustable lighting ($100β$300), storage cabinet ($100β$300), linens and disposables ($200β$400), dΓ©cor and ambiance ($100β$300). Zoning alert: Check municipal regulations BEFORE investing. Many areas permit home beauty businesses; some require permits or restrict signage, parking, and client volume.
Salon suite companies (Sola, Phenix) provide turnkey rooms with shared utilities. Advantages: professional appearance, pre-approved for beauty services, shared reception. You provide: all furniture and equipment, your signage and branding, privacy treatments for windows, additional outlets if needed (consult management β no DIY electrical). Key questions for suite providers: Electrical capacity per suite? (Need 20A for powerful devices.) Weight limit for equipment? Operating hours? (24/7 ideal.) In-suite water supply?
Maximum control and professionalism. Plan layout before signing lease: treatment rooms, reception, storage, bathroom, potential consultation room and retail area. Build-out priorities: Dedicated 20A circuits per treatment room (laser may need 30A). Hot/cold water per room or adjacent. Individual temperature control. Soundproofing between rooms and from exterior. Schedule health department inspection early β multi-week wait times are common.
