The Science
The 755nm Alexandrite wavelength sits in a part of the spectrum where melanin absorption is high but penetration is still meaningful. Following the principle of selective photothermolysis, the energy is preferentially absorbed by melanin in the hair shaft and follicle, converting to heat that disables the follicle.
Its strong melanin affinity is both its strength and its limitation: on fair skin with dark hair it produces rapid, thorough results, but on darker skin the epidermal melanin competes for the energy, raising the risk of burns and pigment change. Robust cooling (cryogen spray, contact or cold air) is therefore essential to protect the surface.
Alexandrite is the speed-and-efficacy champion on light skin with dark hair; for darker phototypes, a 1064nm Nd:YAG is the safer melanin-targeting choice.
