Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is a broad-spectrum flashlampânot a single-wavelength laserâthat emits a band of light filtered for the task at hand. The Science
Unlike a laser, which emits one coherent wavelength, IPL fires a broad band of light from a xenon flashlamp. Cut-off filters remove the shorter, more aggressive wavelengths so the remaining spectrum is matched to a targetâmelanin for pigment and hair, or oxyhemoglobin for vascular lesions and redness.
The principle is still selective photothermolysis: the target chromophore absorbs the light, heats up, and is destroyed or fragmented while surrounding tissue is spared. Pigment is shattered and rises to the surface as “coffee-ground” micro-crusts that flake off; dilated vessels coagulate and are reabsorbed; follicles are thermally disabled.
Because the energy is spread across a spectrum rather than concentrated at one wavelength, IPL is gentler and more versatile than a dedicated laserâbut also less precise and less effective on very coarse or deep hair, and it carries more epidermal risk on darker skin.

Safety
Never treat tanned or recently sun-exposed skinâthis is the single most common cause of IPL burns. Always patch test, use the correct filter, and protect the eyes with rated shields. Spot-darkening (pigment) is expected; blistering is not and signals over-treatment.
