Tecar therapy (CRET — Capacitive and Resistive Electric Transfer) is a radiofrequency-based technology that generates heat from inside the tissue rather than applying it from outside. Used in physiotherapy, sports recovery and aesthetics, it boosts microcirculation, metabolism and collagen activity to accelerate recovery, relieve pain and firm and contour the body.
The Science
Tecar uses a radiofrequency current passed between an active electrode and a return plate. Rather than heating the skin from a hot surface, it makes the body’s own tissues generate heat from within through the movement of charged particles—endogenous heating. This reaches deeper and more comfortably than external heat sources.
Two modes target different tissues. The capacitive (CAP) mode, using an insulated electrode, concentrates energy in soft, water-rich tissue like muscle and fat—ideal for circulation, drainage and contouring. The resistive (RES) mode, using a bare electrode, deposits energy in denser, higher-resistance tissue such as tendons, ligaments and bone-adjacent structures—ideal for deep recovery and pain. The resulting rise in microcirculation, cellular metabolism and collagen activity accelerates tissue repair and, in aesthetics, firms and shapes treated areas.
Endogenous heat is the key: Tecar warms tissue from the inside out, reaching depths and comfort levels that external heat or surface RF cannot match.
The Process
The return electrode is positioned to complete the circuit.
CAP for soft tissue/contouring, RES for deep tendon/recovery work.
The operator glides the electrode with cream, building comfortable deep warmth.
No downtime; the area feels warm and relaxed.
Indications
Speeds muscle recovery and reduces fatigue (wellness/physio).
Eases chronic and acute musculoskeletal pain.
Improves skin firmness and contour via collagen activity.
Boosts microcirculation and lymphatic flow.
Why Tecar
Reaches deeper tissue than surface heat or RF.
Warm and relaxing—well tolerated.
CAP and RES cover soft and dense tissue.
RF-based and color-blind.
Clinical Evidence
Journal of Physical Therapy Science · 2015
Improved pain and function in soft-tissue conditions over treatment courses.
European Journal of Sports Science · 2017
Supported faster recovery and increased local microcirculation.
Skin Safety
| I | II | III | IV | V | VI | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Capacitive (CAP) | Safe | Safe | Safe | Safe | Safe | Safe |
| Resistive (RES) | Safe | Safe | Safe | Safe | Safe | Safe |
Tecar is RF-based and safe on all skin tones (I–VI). The relevant cautions are implants and medical conditions, not skin color.
Safety
Avoid metal/electronic implants in the field, do not treat over the heart in cardiac patients, and avoid the abdomen during pregnancy. Keep the electrode moving and monitor warmth to stay comfortable. Use adequate cream as the conductive/glide medium.
✕ Not recommended during pregnancy
For Operators
| Area | Energy | Pulse | Spot | Freq | Cooling | Passes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Body (firming) | CAP 40–70% | Continuous | Large electrode | 0.45–0.6MHz | None | 1 |
| Tendon/recovery | RES 30–60% | Continuous | Small electrode | 0.45–0.6MHz | None | 1 |
Both are RF, but they heat differently.
Heats the dermis from a handpiece.
✓ Pros
Excellent for facial skin tightening.
✕ Cons
Shallower; less suited to deep tissue/recovery.
Acoustic deep heating.
✓ Pros
Targeted deep heating.
✕ Cons
Different mechanism; less versatile CAP/RES control.
Use surface RF for facial tightening and Tecar for deep body work, recovery and pain—they are complementary, not interchangeable.
Operator Training
Training covers CAP vs RES mode selection, electrode and cream technique, return-plate placement, anatomy-aware treatment and contraindication screening.
FAQ
Capacitive mode concentrates heat in soft, water-rich tissue (muscle, fat) for circulation and contouring; resistive mode targets denser tissue (tendons, joints) for deep recovery and pain.
