Acoustic cavitation is the formation and violent collapse of micro-bubbles created by low-frequency ultrasound. In body contouring, that collapse ruptures fat-cell membranes, releasing their stored fat for clearance.
Acoustic cavitation is a physical phenomenon in which intense low-frequency ultrasound (typically around 40kHz in aesthetic devices) creates microscopic bubbles in the fluid between cells. These bubbles rapidly expand and then violently collapse, releasing a concentrated burst of energy.
In ultrasonic cavitation body contouring, that collapsing energy is directed at the membranes of fat cells (adipocytes), which are relatively fragile. The pressure ruptures the membrane, spilling the cell’s stored triglycerides into the surrounding space, from where the lymphatic system carries them away to be metabolised. Surrounding structures—skin, vessels, nerves—are more resilient and are largely unaffected at the frequencies used.
