The dermis is the thick layer beneath the epidermis where collagen, elastin, blood vessels and oil glands live. It is the true target of skin tightening, anti-ageing and most rejuvenation energy devices.
The dermis is the substantial layer of skin sitting beneath the epidermis. It is the structural heart of the skin, home to the collagen and elastin fibres that provide firmness and elasticity, the fibroblasts that produce them, plus blood vessels, nerves and glands.
Almost all anti-ageing energy work targets the dermis. Radiofrequency and HIFU heat it to trigger collagen contraction and new collagen synthesis; non-ablative lasers and microneedling create controlled dermal injury to provoke remodelling. The challenge is always to deposit energy in the dermis while sparing the overlying epidermis—the reason depth control, cooling and (for HIFU) precise focal depth are so important.
