Photosensitivity is a heightened sensitivity of the skin to light, caused by certain medications, conditions, or treatments like photodynamic therapy. It is a critical screening point before any light-based treatment.
Photosensitivity is an abnormally strong reaction of the skin to light—sunlight or device light—that can cause exaggerated burning, redness or rash from an exposure that would normally be harmless. It matters in two distinct ways for an energy-based practice.
First, as a contraindication: many common medications (some antibiotics, retinoids like isotretinoin, certain diuretics and others) and conditions (such as lupus) make a client photosensitive, meaning laser, IPL and LED treatments must be deferred or avoided. Screening for these is a non-negotiable part of consultation. Second, as an intended, temporary state: photodynamic therapy deliberately makes target tissue photosensitive with a photosensitiser, which is exactly why PDT requires strict avoidance of all light for around 48 hours afterward to prevent a severe reaction.
For clinics, rigorous photosensitivity screening is both a safety essential and a medico-legal protection.
