Pick your model
Each card opens its own deep-dive: equipment, licensing, staffing, and operator case studies.
Multi-service aesthetic clinics offering injectables alongside device treatments. Highest revenue ceiling per square foot.
Wellness-focused, broad menu โ facials, body treatments, massage add-ons. Repeat clients drive economics.
Medical-grade devices for treating conditions. Tight licensing, premium pricing, insurance-adjacent.
Hair-led businesses adding aesthetic services. Lowest barrier, fastest revenue lift from existing clientele.
Independent practitioners โ in-home or rented suite. Lowest barrier and fastest path to first-year revenue.
High-end transient clientele. Premium positioning, signature treatments, brand partnerships.
Training schools needing reliable, well-documented equipment for student practice and certification.
Multi-location operators needing fleet standardization, central training, and SLA-grade support across regions.
Industry signals
What we're hearing across the operators in our network. Directional observations, not survey data โ adjust for your market.
Commercial rent pressure plus social-media-driven client acquisition is making solo operators more economically viable. Equipment portability matters more than ever.
Affects: solo-mobile, salon add-ons
Wage growth for licensed medical staff (RN, NP) is outpacing typical aesthetic price increases. New medspa entrants need to design for leaner staffing from day one.
Affects: medspa, derm clinic
Hotel and resort spa demand swings with travel cycles and discretionary spending. Operators in this segment increasingly add member programs to smooth revenue.
Affects: hotel-spa
Existing salons increasingly add aesthetic services as a margin-recovery strategy. The "salon adds IPL + LED" pattern is now well-established.
Affects: beauty-salon
Several US states have updated medical-supervision requirements for medspas in recent years. Check your state board before committing to a medspa or derm-adjacent model.
Affects: medspa, derm clinic
Lease vs buyout calculus has shifted with interest rates. For most new operators we recommend lease-to-own on at least half the initial equipment to preserve working capital.

Where the money goes
Most "startup cost" estimates only show the equipment number. Here's the full picture โ equipment is usually 35โ50% of total launch cost.
| Category | Day spa | Medical spa | Derm clinic | Solo / mobile |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Equipment (devices, consumables) | $8โ20K | $25โ80K | $60โ180K | $4โ15K |
| Fit-out & furniture | $5โ15K | $15โ40K | $25โ60K | $0โ3K |
| Licensing & insurance (first year) | $1โ3K | $5โ15K | $15โ40K | $500โ2K |
| Initial marketing (Google, Instagram) | $2โ8K | $8โ25K | $15โ40K | $500โ5K |
| Working capital (first 6mo) | $15โ30K | $30โ80K | $60โ150K | $3โ10K |
| Total realistic launch | $31โ76K | $83โ240K | $175โ470K | $8โ35K |
Ranges reflect what we typically see across our operator network. Your specific market, real estate costs, and team structure will narrow the range significantly. Build a personalized cost estimate โ

Operator stories
Hidden until real customer cases are added (no fabricated numbers).
Section reserved
This section displays anonymized operator case studies once real data is added in WordPress.
Required per story: anonymized initials, role + location/region, optional payback period (months), "biggest mistake" quote, "what I'd do differently" quote.
We don't display revenue numbers โ too personalized to verify and varies wildly by market.
Avoid these traps
First-time operators reach for 'medspa' because it's the highest-revenue model, often with insufficient capital or licensing. Better: start with the highest model your current resources actually support โ you can always graduate later, but you can't recover from running out of working capital in month 8.
It feels safer to "buy the best" but during the first 18 months your equipment usage rate will be lower than expected. Better: lease or finance most of your initial equipment. Switch to buyouts in year 2 once usage stabilizes.
Broad menu sounds defensive ("we won't turn anyone away") but the result is mediocre delivery across the board and rapidly diluted brand reputation. Better: launch with 2 services you can deliver excellently. Add new ones every 4โ6 months as you build expertise.
Many startup-cost estimates only show equipment. But you also need rent, payroll, marketing, and insurance for 6โ9 months before steady client flow. Better: budget total launch as equipment cost ร 2 minimum.
Experienced aestheticians often promise to bring a client list. In practice, most clients are tied to a location or brand, not the individual โ and if the staff leaves, they often take what was theirs. Better: build the business so client relationships are tied to your brand (CRM, loyalty programs, your social channels), not individual staff.
Cross-model comparison
If you’re a licensed MD/DO/PA/NP, both are open to you. The difference is:
Most medical pros transitioning from clinical work start with medspa first โ easier ramp, less administrative overhead.
