Ablative lasers vaporise the surface layers of skin for maximal resurfacing with real downtime; non-ablative lasers heat the dermis without removing the surface, giving gradual improvement with little to no downtime. The choice is a power-versus-recovery trade-off.
Resurfacing lasers fall into two camps. Ablative lasers (CO2 at 10,600nm, Er:YAG at 2,940nm) are absorbed by water and literally vaporise the outer skin layers, forcing a powerful wound-healing and collagen response. Non-ablative lasers pass through the surface to heat the dermis while leaving the epidermis intact.
The difference patients feel is downtime. Ablative treatment delivers the most dramatic results for deep wrinkles, scars and sun damage—but with days to weeks of redness, oozing and peeling. Non-ablative treatment improves tone, fine lines and mild texture gradually over a series of sessions, with little more than transient redness. Fractional delivery blurs the line by making ablative results more tolerable, but the fundamental trade-off remains: more surface disruption means more result and more recovery.
Stocking both, or a fractional platform that can dial between them, lets a clinic match the treatment to each patient’s tolerance for downtime.
