Fractional describes a laser that treats the skin in a grid of microscopic columns, leaving healthy untreated skin in between. This 'fractionated' delivery drives strong resurfacing results with much faster healing than treating the whole surface.
A fractional laser does not treat the whole skin surface at once. Instead it delivers energy in a grid of tiny microthermal zones—microscopic columns of treated tissue—while deliberately leaving the skin between them untouched.
That intact surrounding tissue is the whole point: it acts as a reservoir of healthy cells that rapidly repair the treated columns. The result is the dramatic collagen remodelling and resurfacing of an aggressive laser, but with a fraction of the downtime that full-surface (‘fully ablative’) treatment once required. Fractional delivery can be applied to ablative lasers (CO2, Er:YAG) and non-ablative ones, and it is also the principle behind RF microneedling, which creates a fractional pattern of energy points electrically rather than optically.
