Epidermal cooling is any method—contact plate, cryogen spray or cold air—used to protect the skin surface during laser treatment. It lets the operator use higher, more effective fluences safely, especially on darker skin.
When a laser targets a structure below the surface—a hair follicle, a blood vessel, dermal collagen—the epidermis above it, rich in melanin, also absorbs some energy and heats up. Epidermal cooling removes that surface heat so the operator can push the fluence high enough to treat the deeper target without burning the skin.
There are three common approaches: a chilled sapphire contact tip held against the skin, a burst of cryogen spray timed with each pulse, and a stream of cold forced air. Cooling can be applied before, during and after the pulse. Beyond safety, it dramatically improves comfort, which matters for client retention.
Effective integrated cooling is one of the biggest differentiators between a basic and a premium laser platform—it is what makes higher-energy, faster, and dark-skin-safe treatment practical.
