Fluence is the amount of energy a laser or light device delivers per unit of skin area, measured in joules per square centimetre (J/cm²). It is the core 'dose' dial—too low and the treatment is ineffective, too high and you risk burns.
Fluence (energy density) is how much energy is packed into each square centimetre of skin, written as J/cm². If wavelength decides where the energy goes, fluence decides how much—making it the operator’s primary lever for results and the primary lever for risk.
Set fluence too low and the target never reaches its destruction threshold: hair grows back, pigment shrugs it off, collagen is not remodelled. Set it too high—especially on darker skin where surface melanin competes for the energy—and you cross into blistering, crusting and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. The art of laser practice is finding the highest fluence the skin will tolerate safely, often guided by a test patch and adjusted alongside pulse duration and cooling.
