Pulse duration (pulse width) is how long each burst of laser energy lasts. Matching it to the size of the target—via the target's thermal relaxation time—is what lets a laser heat and destroy a structure without damaging the skin around it.
Pulse duration is the length of time the laser fires in a single shot—ranging from milliseconds (ms) for hair and vessels, to nanoseconds (ns) for Q-switched pigment work, to picoseconds (ps) for the newest tattoo and pigment lasers.
The principle that ties it together is thermal relaxation time: every target cools at a rate set by its size. To confine heat to the target and protect surrounding tissue, the pulse should be equal to or shorter than the target’s cooling time. Large targets (a coarse hair follicle) tolerate longer pulses; tiny targets (a pigment particle) need ultra-short pulses to be shattered before the heat spreads. Get this wrong and energy diffuses into the skin as collateral damage.
Adjustable pulse duration is therefore a mark of a capable platform—it lets one device safely treat different targets and adapt to different skin types.
